Historical Documents

The appendix of George Orwell鈥檚 1984 is written in standard English and refers to Ingsoc, the Party, and Newspeak in the past tense. Critics, therefore, from Margaret Atwood to Thomas Pynchon, have argued that Orwell offers hope in his otherwise bleak novel, connoting that its totalitarian regime will eventually collapse. Historical Documents appropriates Orwell鈥檚 world, subverting the themes of 1984 and suggesting that although language can restrict thought, it also has the power to free one鈥檚 mind.
