Biography
Dr Shyam Barr is an educator, researcher, and consultant specialising in self-regulated learning (SRL), where his work bridges research and practice to strengthen how educators support students’ metacognition, motivation, and independent learning.
Shyam is the author of Educate to Self-Regulate: Empowering Learners for Lifelong Success (Amba Press), a resource adopted by schools and systems internationally and acclaimed for its practical, evidence-informed approach. He is also the co-host of the Educate to Self-Regulate podcast, downloaded in more than 40 countries, and was a featured speaker at TEDx Canberra 2022.
He has led major partnerships with schools and education systems, including professional learning initiatives with the South Australian Department for Education and the Queensland Department of Education. His programs and research focus on building shared language and strategy instruction for SRL in classrooms, equipping teachers to foster lifelong learning skills in young people.
Shyam’s contributions have been recognised through national awards, including the ACEL ACT Excellence in Educational Leadership Award (2025), the ACEL New Voice Scholar Award for Educational Leadership Research (2024), and being listed among Australia’s Most Influential Educators (2024) by The Educator.
Prior to his academic and consultancy career, Shyam was a secondary school teacher and educational leader. He holds a PhD in Education from the 天涯社区, along with multiple Master’s degrees in leadership, policy, and cognitive psychology.
